Dessi and Rose made this chocolate orange cake the other day and it was perfection! The cake is easy to make, gluten free, and perfect for dessert or a afternoon pick me up with a cup of tea.

You can also make this chocolate cake dairy free if you swap ghee for virgin coconut oil. Just keep in mind that ghee has no lactose or casein.

How To Make Chocolate Orange Cake

Start the cake recipe by mixing the wet ingredients in one bowl. Beat the eggs with the coconut sugar until the eggs are fluffy. Add the orange zest, juice, melted ghee, and vanilla extract. Mix until combined.

In another bowl, add the paleo flour mix, baking powder, cocoa powder, and salt. Mix well then add then add the wet ingredients on top of the dry and mix until combined.

Add the cake batter to a prepared 8 inch spring form pan and bake at 325F for 30-40 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.

Let the cake cool, then brush over the hot glaze made with orange juice, coconut sugar, and water.

Ingredients

For the cake:

  • 4 eggs
  • ½ cup coconut sugar
  • zest of 1 orange
  • ¼ cup freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 1/2 cup ghee or coconut oil melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 3/4 cup Paleo baking flour mix we use Bob's red mill
  • 6 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

For the glaze:

  • 1 tablespoon coconut sugar
  • 3 tablespoons orange juice
  • 2 tablespoons water

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 325F degrees.

  2. In a large bowl, beat the eggs and sugar together using a hand mixer until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes. Add the orange zest, juice, ghee, and the vanilla extract, mix well.

  3. Add the paleo flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, 1/4 teaspoon salt, and mix just until everything is combined. Add the batter to a cake pan or spring form pan (I used a round 8 inch pan) that has been sprayed with non-stick spray and bake for 30-40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean. Let the cake cool down at room temperature.

  4. To make the glaze, add all the ingredients to a small pot and heat over medium heat until the sugar is dissolved, mix well. Use a pastry brush or spoon and brush the glaze all around the cake. Serve and enjoy, this cake stays moist for days..if it lasts that long!

Recipe Notes

*Cooks note: You can use any gluten free flour mix - just be sure it doesn't contain any bean flour. The ones I use are by Bob's red mill, and Costco brand.
